Terrain: Pamir and Alay mountains dominate the landscape. Western Fergana Valley in north. Kofarnihon and Vakhsh Valleys in southwest

Ethnic Groups: Tajik 79.9%, Uzbek 15.3%, Russian 1.1% (declining because of emigration), Kyrgyz 1.1%, other 2.6% (2000 census)

Languages: Tajik (official), Russian widely used in government and business

Literacy: 99.5% (male=99.7%,female=99.2%) (2010)

Languages with Scriptures: 9 Bibles, 2 New Testaments, 7 portions (2010)

Religions: Sunni Muslim 87%, Shi'a Muslim 6%, Christian 1.04%, other 5.03%

Religious freedom is guaranteed, but the government closely watches all religious activity. Proselytism is not forbidden, but any activity causing religious tension is quashed.
